Why I am writing about college debt? This subject has always been an annoyance to me since finding out that the Finnish government would send a check to one of my friends to help pay for her college tuition -- this was on top of what her parents gave her. I just can't understand how a country as wealthy and capable as the good 'ol USA would foster an environment that burdened their students with so much debt. Would it not be a more efficient use of money to pay for our education so that we could focus on making better widgets? All I hear from our current Congress is how China is doing this and that unfairly, when in reality we rely on each other in very complex and beneficial ways. I would like to know when our students (our country's future) are going to be in the top 5 of anything beside sports. I would like that to be one of our main points of focus. What do you think?

3. College debt is a huge [problem]. It took me years to pay off a loan at a higher rate than my single friends. Because I was married we were penalized compared to students who due to their single status could secure loans with less than half the interest rates. I chose to get a degree in a field that I was interested in and hopeful that I would be able to secure work. That was not the case and I was underemployed trying to pay off debt and because quite simply I had to work, and unfortunately I might add working for employers' who seemed only interested in whether or not I was going to have children. They were disinterested in what talents I had too offer. The best advice I was given after grauduating was at an interview. The man told me to not go to college and incur more debt unless my company was willing to pay for it...

5. Murty,
What if you didn't have to take on debt to go or continue college? Wouldn't that be better for all? I would like to know who is making all the profit on these loans.
I have to agree with Sean. If we didn't have to take on so much debt or even worry about paying for college, then we could be citizens that are more productive - i.e. widgets. If anyone knows where most of the profits goes to on these loans, please post a link to the report or something. I would love to know.

6. I certainly agree, is a shame how are children who are born here can not get the help. Especially when they are high honors and good civilians who care and do good for this country while money is waste on " unneccessary "

7. I am a mother with several children. For each of my children, I have a college saving account. If we are a country that believes in the "boot-strap" mentality, then we shouldn't have a national higher education plan. The responsibility of educating our children is left up to the family. Thus, we as a country have failed our children by not saving for their education and leaving that up to them - again the "boot-strap" mentality. Is this the most efficient way? I'm not sure. I am saving for my children's higher education, but what about the vast amount that don't have that type of help? What should we do as a nation? Should the government mandate that we save for each child's higher education? As parents we need to stop giving our children the responsibilities of adults.

8. The entire system in the USA is to assist employers to garner talent by offering J-O-B's. Our school system is so antiquanted that there are 3 months off in the summer for kids to work on the family farm. And when did we as Americans have a family farm that needed help? Very few family farms are left. Yet the system is continuing for the needs of an agricultural community that ceased to mean the vast majority of citizens. One hundred years old and still entrenched is how you must view this school system. Now why would a country based today on assisting the Employer class want to entitle a person to go to college and give them aid? Ridiculous concept as the educated person might begin to think and question what's going on here. Yes, we keep printing money we don't have in this country backed by nothing but green ink and paper, but that's to assist the war machine that goes on & on & on. We had a President who warned us decades ago to beware the military-industrial complex. What did it mean then? He'd been the very top General in the Army before becoming a much beloved President. He knew what was going on then. He warned us. But on we frolicked not heeding his warnings. Today we are supporting the war machine...we take young people & send them off to a war regarding the vast amounts of oil and other commodities we want. Yes, the students want the heat and light and the internet which is not available unless this hungry country has its needs met by oil.
Kids, grow up & move your family to other countries so your education will be provided for by those other governments.
This country is rewarding the banks who grant you those student loans & the credit card companies which entice you with a credit card to lead you into more slavery. Grow up & see who's making out here in this country. It's not the little families. It's just not concerned about you at all except as wage slaves and recruits.

9. I am a 50 yr old woman that started my college career in 1992 and finished in 2004. I earned an A.A.S. in Foodservice-Restaurant Mgmt, 2 Bachelors - one in Organizational Mgmt and one in Education K-6, and a Masters Degree in Education - Curriculum & Development, each time hoping this was my ticket to a good job. Instead, I am faced with $50k in college debt and no decent paying job prospects - at least none that pay more than minimum wage or that will hire someone who is 50 yrs. old. Experience and education do not pay well - especially if you have too much of both. As far as age discrimination goes - don't let anyone tell you it doesn't exist in the USA - I encountered it at every job I've had since 1994. I finally threw the towel in at 50.
