Sexy, or Not?
We've all seen the lists each year, "The Hottest Husband," "The Sexiest Bachelor," and the "Best-Dressed Celeb." Maybe you click through the pictures, or flip through the magazine. Maybe you decide to go out and buy the knock-off of that one celeb's dress. It's all just good fun, right? That's what I thought, and then I came across the "Unsexiest Women Alive" list. Then I was pissed. First of all, do these editors have nothing better to do than to pick out flaws on women who probably already pay or work really hard to get the bodies they have? Second of all, is that what "news" has dropped to, the body-obsessing to such extremes? What good will it do to young girls or women of any age to read a list like that? Don't we already have enough body issues without scary, unnecessary labels like "un-sexy," which do nothing to boost a woman's sexual confidence?

6. Thanks for pointing out that this is problematic. It reminds me of the book The Beauty Myth which discusses how society's beauty ideals for women are not only unattainable but ever changing - the same women who are now on the un-sexy list were very likely on a list praising their beauty at some point in the past. It is sad that women, who usually have lower economic spending power than men anyway, spend so much money (and time and energy) to try to achieve the current beauty standard and doubly sad for them to find out that perhaps the beauty standard they tried to achieve has changed.
My advice is to concentrate your energy and money on more productive pursuits than the latest beauty trends. (Though I acknowledge that it can be hard to do so when beauty is so revered by society.) Even something as simple as cutting back a few dollars here and there on costly beauty rituals to start saving for retirement - women are at a much higher risk than men of living in poverty in old age - is a good starting point!
