Replacing a Showerhead

By BARBARA K

Step One: What You Need
You'll need 8-inch slip joint pliers, sealant tape, and of course, a new showerhead. You should be able to talk to someone at your local hardware store about the different options and which one will work best for you.

Step Two: Removing the Old Showerhead
Using the pliers, hold the shower pipe stem and twist the old showerhead off. If you see any old sealant tape there, remove it. Next, if your shower has a rubber "boot," push it up out of the way so you can see the pipe stem.

Then, wrap new sealant tape a few times around the threads at the end of the pipe stem.

Step Three: Installing the New Showerhead
Then screw the new showerhead onto the pipe stem. This showerhead here has two pieces to install, though most have only one. Use pliers to secure the new showerhead on tightly. Make sure it’s on straight and that it’s not cross-threaded.

    Extra Hints:
Make sure your shower floor or tub is dry before starting your project to ensure that you don't slip!

    How to Choose a Showerhead
Showerheads vary and you have to decide what you want depending on look, water flow, your height and other features. Shop around.

    To Test for Leaks
Stand back and turn on the water. If it leaks, give the showerhead another turn. If there are still leaks, take the showerhead off completely, wrap a few extra layers of sealant tape and then reattach the showerhead as before.
