'After Diana' Q&A With Christopher Andersen

Q: How are Charles and Camilla holding up given all this new attention to Diana?

A: Well, I doubt if you'll be seeing either Charles or Camilla at the concert. Even in death, Diana seems to be calling the shots, and it's obvious Charles and Camilla will have to live out their lives with the gray ghost of Diana looming over them. The boys accept Camilla because she makes their father happy. They don't really believe Camilla is trying to replace Diana. But, in fact, she has. Camilla is Princess of Wales and will be Queen. She actually flaunts her victory by frequently wearing some of Diana's favorite pieces of jewelry. By the way, it's been 10 years and Charles and the Queen have still never visited Diana's grave, despite the fact that the boys go every year. I think that speaks volumes.

Q: Let's talk about William. You say that by the time he went to St. Andrews University in 2001, his close friends and even family members were worried that he was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Can you give us details?

A: William was always the peacemaker, the fixer. Diana called him "my deep thinker." When she locked herself in the bathroom weeping after a fight with Charles, it was 8-year-old William who slipped Kleenex under the door and whispered, "Don't cry, Mummy. I hate to see you sad." When Diana died, he internalized everything. So by the time he got to St. Andrews he was moody, sullen and withdrawn. He admitted that he was desperately unhappy, and even said "I go into my own little world." Then along came Kate Middleton. I give her a lot of credit for coming to his emotional rescue.

Q: Why did he break up with Kate Middleton? Will it stick?

A: No one expected it. The breakup was brought on by William's persistent nightmare that the woman he loves will be literally chased to her death by the press the way Diana was. The only way to get the press to back off was to break up. But he has invited her to the memorial concert. Those who know them believe they will definitely be together, if indeed they ever really broke up in the first place. Charles, the Queen and all the royals loved and accepted her. It would be hard to imagine anyone else fitting the bill of royal bride more perfectly than Kate Middleton.

Q: Harry's reputation is that of a wild child. Yet he's with Chelsy Davy for some three years now. Can you talk about their relationship?

A: She is obviously willing to put up with quite a lot! Harry is often out at the clubs partying with beautiful women. But friends say Harry and Chelsy are in love, although she has not been embraced by the royals the way Kate Middleton was. Chelsy is a drop-dead gorgeous blond surfer girl type -- a tad flashy for the Windsors.

Q: Rumor is that Harry might be going to Afghanistan and that William wants to fight for his country.

A: Harry is a career officer. He has said from the beginning that he would quit the army if he couldn't fight. William, on the other hand, had always said he understood that as heir to the throne he wouldn't be put in harm's way. But now he really wants to see action. That's not going to happen.

I think Diana would have understood her sons' desire to serve at the front. She had a deep sense of doing one's duty and actually encouraged the boys' interest in the military by dressing them up in fatigues and taking them to army bases to ride in tanks. She would have been scared to death, but she would have been proud of them.

Q: And the nagging rumors of Harry's paternity?

A: : As he's grown older, Harry's resemblance to Diana's lover James Hewitt has grown stronger. And we're not just talking about the red hair. It's also the eyes, mouth, hairline, ears. Even the gestures, expressions and the way they walk are uncannily similar. For years, both Diana and Hewitt said they met in l986, two years after Harry was born. But now Hewitt admits that their affair actually began in mid-l982,

and others have confirmed this. When you put that together with the fact that Hewitt was the first person outside the immediate family Diana called to tell she was pregnant a second time and her statement that from the moment Charles looked at Harry for the first time in the hospital the marriage "went straight downhill," there is ample evidence that Hewitt may indeed be Harry's dad.

Harry has offered to take a DNA test. He wants to know the truth. But the Palace will never permit it. They can't take the chance. Charles would always love Harry as a son regardless of the outcome, but if it turns out that Harry is not a Windsor, then it would trigger a huge crisis for the monarchy.

Q: We're coming up on the 10th anniversary of Diana's death this August. Once again, we're inundated with books, television shows, etc. about her. What made you decide to jump in?

A: To think that 10 years have passed is just staggering. The year after her death, Diana topped every opinion poll as the world's most admired woman. But in recent years we've seen the systematic dissing of Di. A smear campaign in which former employees, so-called friends, even some senior royals have portrayed her as spoiled, neurotic and manipulative. Diana was a very complicated woman, but whatever emotional problems she had were caused by Charles' infidelity and, frankly, the callousness of her in-laws.

I wanted to both defend the Princess and reveal how her legacy is being carried on by her sons, William and Harry. I wanted to talk about the impact she's having today on William, Harry, Charles, Camilla, the Queen -- and the world. And, as far as I'm concerned, this is the world's longest-running soap opera. You've got sex, scandal, power, wealth, glamour, intrigue, tragedy. What's not to love?
