Be a Mystery Shopper
Shopaholics listen up! Retailers hire secret shoppers to evaluate customer service. Get paid to visit stores, spas, and restaurants and then file a report on your overall shopping experience. The Better Business Bureau has a directory of reputable mystery shopping businesses and services and pay scales.
Be a House Sitter
Travelers can take comfort knowing that someone they trust is watching the home-front for $15 to $50 a day, depending on what the residents want you to do: water the plants, get the mail, run errands, stay overnight. Discuss what to do during an emergency. Get noticed by posting flyers and online ads in your community.
Run a Pet-Sitting or Walking Service
Like pets? Love to walk dogs and cuddle with cats. You can care for them while their owners are at work or away. Pay runs at about $25 for day visits (including walks, feeding, and administering meds); double or more for overnight service. Put up flyers in local pet stores or veterinarian offices.
Be a Tutor
Capitalize on your expertise and interests by helping students of all ages with their educational pursuits. Elementary math averages about $30 to $50 per house while standardized test prep pays as much as $100 per session or more. Contact your local schools or PTAs about advertising in their publications.
Be a Focus Group Participant
You can get paid $75 per hour to $800 per day to share your opinions. Sessions range from testing soda recipes to assessing ad campaigns. Also, you can participate in academic or corporate research projects. Look for newspaper ads or apply directly to companies you're interested in.
Decorate Cakes
If you are creative and enjoy baking, practice might be all you need to start a customized cake business. Cake decorators stay busy all year long and positive word of mouth might be all the advertising you need. It wouldn't hurt to network with other party professionals like wedding planners and caterers.
Braid Hair
Do what you know. So if you've got magic fingers and are good at braiding, cornrows, twists, and extensions and enjoy working with people of all ages, you can earn anywhere from $35 to $90 and up right in your own home. And your kids can help; ask them to spread the word to their friends and other prospective clients.
Be a Relocation Specialist
It's just like the Welcome Wagon -- only you get paid. Help newcomers locate the best hair salon, dry cleaner or handyman in the area. Not only can you earn high rates, but it's a great opportunity to network with a variety of professionals and neighbors.
Be a Professional Organizer
Straightening up someone else's cluttered garage, filling out their insurance reimbursements, or cataloging their photos can be easier to do than your own. And it pays better, too, anywhere from $15 an hour to hundreds per project. Again, rely on word of mouth, flyers, and local web sites.
Be a Sports Coach/Referee
If you know about the rules and enjoy attending sports games, consider being a referee. This affords you the opportunity to become a mentor and encourage children's personal development through the value of teamwork and physical activity. Contact your local schools, sports clubs, and community-centers.
