You: Staying Young

Turn Back the Clock

Wouldn't you like to know how to stay younger longer and prevent your body from aging badly? Drs. Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz, authors of 'You: Staying Young,' share all you need to know in order to extend your lifetime warranty.

Eat, Sex, Love

Mirror, Mirror

Start with a baseline. Go up to three strangers and ask them how old they think you are. Truthfully. Appearance and demeanor can be strong indicators of your actual health. Next, challenge yourself: How have I aged over the last five years?

Trash the Nasty Foods

That means anything where saturated or trans fat, corn or soybean oil and simple sugars -- anything ending in -ose, like sucrose and fructose -- are listed as one of the first five ingredients on the label. That doesn't mean an empty fridge or pantry. Restock with plenty of good-for-you foods.

Are You Hungry? Good!

Eat about three-quarters the amount of food you usually eat (only healthy foods, now). You should soon begin to feel what calorie restriction -- the only proven senility eraser -- feels like. Chances are, you'll begin to eat less, painlessly and happily, within a few days.

Toilet Time

How often do you go to the bathroom (we're talking numero uno). If it's more than 12 times a day -- or three times in a three hour period -- you should get your urine tested for sugar. You should also have a yearly screening of fasting blood sugar, so you can treat it before your blood glucose gets above 200. High blood sugar is a sign of diabetes.

Did You Say Chi-Gong

It's not a tea or percussion instrument. Chi-gong is an ancient series of bodily movements and breathing that calms the spirit and mind. It has also been shown to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress and improve balance and posture -- all vital as we get older. List the two things in your life that stress you the most.

Detox Your Home

Leave toxicity at the front door, along with your shoes. Other simple steps are to eliminate everyday toxins are to throw away your sponges -- replace with dishcloths that you wash weekly -- and all plastic dry cleaning wraps. Protect your pillows and mattresses against dust-mites with well-laundered covers. Other simple steps are to eliminate everyday toxins.

Adios Addictions

Keep your body and mind free from addiction. If you're a smoker, talk to your doctor about nicotine patches or a prescription that will block the nicotine receptors in your brain. Therapists, treatment centers and support groups can also help with alcohol or substance abuse.

Strengthen Your Relationships

Carve out at least one hour each day to do something as a family; whether that means you and your children and partner, or you and a circle of friends. Practice a day of nonjudgement, where you live, work and observe without judging--including yourself!

Stop Reading Self-Help Books

And start doing what they say. In just two weeks you can actually reprogram your brain to make staying young part of your routine. Measure your real age and health right now.
