The Power of Body Language

  • The Power of Body Language

    Enhance Everyday Communication

Harness the power of nonverbal cues to get what you desire from others. AOL Wellness Life Coach Tonya Reiman, author of 'The Power of Body Language,' explains how the right secret signal in various situations can help you get the results you're looking for.

  • The Power of Body Language

    Be a Good Liar

Everybody lies. In fact, 60 percent of us do within 10 minutes of conversation. Nonetheless, we expect honesty. Driving your point home is not what you say, it's how you say it. Practice when to look at (and away) from a person, when to smile and when to shrug. Hey, you're simply helping people believe what they want to believe.

  • The Power of Body Language

    Seduce Him

Body language is seduction. You just have to open his eyes. Try out these signals (just not at the same time): Look at him a second longer than appropriate, lick yourlips, fondle your neckline or gaze longingly at his mouth. Don't forget Reese Witherspoon's trick in Legally Blond: push your shoulders back and thrust your breasts in his direction.

  • The Power of Body Language

    Seduce Her

Most guys are forthright with their attraction by exploring a woman's erogenous parts with their eyes. Looking for more? Start with a smile and eyebrow flash. Follow up by angling your entire body toward her and touching her in a respectful area, such as her hand, arm or shoulder. Women are good at detecting signals, so don't overdo it.

  • The Power of Body Language

    Make and Keep True Friends

The best signals for building rapport with friends is making strong eye contact, mirroring facial expressions and body movements, lots of nodding and genuine smiles. Listen twice as much as you speak when you're first getting to know someone.

  • The Power of Body Language

    Parent Better

You always want to use open body language whenever you're dealing with a crisis with your child; drop the you're in trouble stance: arms crossed, leaning on one leg and skeptical eyebrow. Instead, look them in the eye and say, Looks like you're upset. What happened? You should hug a minimum of four times a day.

  • The Power of Body Language

    Approach a Group

If a group is standing with their bodies pointed toward one another, you're not invited. Should you see one person's feet poking out away from the crowd, that'san opening. Take a moment to adjust yourself -- elongate your neck, pull back your shoulders and breathe. Allow them to start the conversation, even if it's just "What's up?"

  • The Power of Body Language

    Be a Tough Customer

A salesperson's bread and butter depends on how well they size you up. Your job is counter that. Disclose no details about yourself -- certainly not your degree of interest or budget -- for as long as possible. The longer you remain aloof, the harder he's going to have to work to entice you and the better deal you'll get.

  • The Power of Body Language

    Manipulate Others

Whether you're angling for a promotion or want your kid to clean his room, sometimes we need to persuade others to do our bidding. By speaking faster with varied pitch, leaning in closer than you normally would and smiling (eye crinkles, please), you will convey control and caring about how the other person feels.

  • The Power of Body Language

    Build a Team

When you're a leader (at work, Girl Scouts) you need to make certain that everyone has the same opportunities. Allow each member of your "round table" to make contributions and support one another. Group rapport is most evident when everyone has the same look on her face, the same energy and laughs at the same time.
